Is the Cosmetic Treatment Kybella as Effective as Lipo Under the Chin?

With Kybella, it’s time to say goodbye to that submental fullness. So long, double chins!.

Kybella is a non-invasive, non-surgical medical treatment. Kybella uses a technique wherein a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid is injected beneath the chin where excess fat is visible.

Deoxycholic acid is a naturally present molecule in the body that helps in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When Kybella is injected into the target areas, it destroys fat cells. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. What makes Kybella a perfect cosmetic treatment is that once it destroys fat cells stored under your chin, the cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, making it a permanent solution. Unlike other non-surgical treatments, which need multiple treatments for them to work.

You might be asking why you should choose Kybella instead of liposuction since it has been around for so long, and it has been improved ever since. Well, let’s take a quick look and compare both of the treatments and see why you should choose which. Let’s compare them by their process, downtime, side effects, and effectiveness.

Process

In liposuction, you can choose from different types of techniques. There’s Tumescent liposuction; Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, or UAL; and Laser-assisted liposuction, or SmartLipo. In general, liposuction is a surgical cosmetic procedure wherein they use different invasive techniques to either remove or burn fat. Liposuction has no specific treatment for double chin. Instead, it can either be neck liposuction, neck lift surgery, or a combination of both.

On the other hand, as aforementioned earlier, Kybella is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure. Synthetic deoxycholic acid is injected into the fatty areas beneath the chin. Kybella only takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The number of injections will depend on the amount of fat the person has under his/her chin and also depends on the desired profile.

Before the procedure, injection sites are marked with a marker. Then, typically, a topical numbing cream is applied to the marks. In case of any pain or discomfort, an ice pack is used to ease the pain. Usually, 20 to 30 injections are used under the chin, depending on the fullness of the submental.

Downtime

With Liposuction, it takes up to 2 weeks to fully recover and return to your daily activities. In terms of double chin, it might take just about a week, but the recovery depends from person to person.

With Kybella, most people usually are permitted to return to their daily activities a day after the treatment.

Side Effects

There are various possible risks directly related to liposuction that you still have to consider, including Shock (usually from not getting enough fluid during surgery); Fluid accumulation (pockets of fluid forming under the skin); Infections; Burns from instruments; Uneven fat removal; Complications from anesthesia; Bleeding; Reactions to lidocaine; numbness; and the worse could be Damage to nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs, and abdominal organs. This is not to inflict fear on people trying to consider liposuction, but liposuction is still a surgery, and affiliated to surgeries are risks. Whether you’re considering Liposuction or Kybella Treatment, it’s best to consult the doctor first so they can advise you of the best options depending on your health condition.

Let’s take a look at Kybella’s reported side effects. Although Kybella is non-surgical and minimally invasive, side effects are still common, but they are not severe. The common side effects, which are typically just minor, include but are not limited to pain, swelling, bruising, redness, and numbness. More serious side effects include, but are not limited to, an uneven smile, trouble swallowing, muscle weakness, or nerve injury. If signs and symptoms of these side effects occur, they should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Cost

Kybella typically costs between $1,200 to $1,800 on average. It depends on the number of treatments necessary, which is relevant to how much fat is present in your chin and factors like your health care provider’s fee and your geographic location.

This is not to exaggerate the cost of liposuction, but since it’s either neck lift, neck liposuction, or both, the cost ranges from $1,200 to $12,700, depending on the health care provider’s approach.

Effectiveness

In terms of effectiveness, Kybella is considered as effective as liposuction. Studies, research, and results show that with Kybella, the effects are permanent. However, just like any other body sculpting, treatments, and surgeries that target excess fat, Kybella works best when you follow a healthy diet and exercise regimen.

Based on a clinical trial, 82.4% of the patients experienced significantly improved satisfaction with their appearance, and only a few experienced severe side effects.

In fact, we would even recommend it instead of the latter. This is not just to show bias on Kybella, but if we try to weigh their advantages and disadvantages, we can agree that Kybella, in terms of the process, is a more convenient way of treating the excess fat underneath the chin. Additionally, the downtime is shorter, which means you can return to your daily activities after just a day or two. Not even to mention the risks and possible side effects from liposuction, which are more common and severe than Kybella. Kybella is a well-tolerated alternative to surgical treatments such as liposuction.

Although Kybella is FDA-approved and proven for its effectiveness, it is still best to consider the best health care provider around your area. The quality of the results and benefits depends on who administers the treatment, so it’s better to check reviews, feedback, and legitimacy of the health care providers you’re trying to consider.
